Technology and the environment are intimately interwoven. the ways in which human beings choose to utilize and deploy technology has significant impacts for the planet and the species which inhabit it. Some technologies have been advanced with the sole purpose of improving the human-ecology relationship, for instance solar powered devices, biofuels, and electric vehicles.
Despite these advances in beneficial alternatives to energy sources and products we have come to rely on, technology does indeed have significant impacts on nature. Nano and micro plastics can be found in the human bloodstream as a consequence of capitalist mechanisms which influence the unending consumption of convenient, trendy products. Research has revealed that 17 in 22 adults were found to have micro plastics in their blood (Leslie et al., 2022). So too does the Mariana trench and Mt. Everset contain remnants of humans' wasteful habits and consumption.
As we continue to innovate and unleash new technologies, we must maintain a connection to nature and not forget that the very resources used in the creation of tech come from the Earth itself. A respect for both nature and technology must be maintained.
